Belle had one strict dating rule: never kiss on the first date. Beau, on the other hand, lived by a different rule: kiss but never tell… except, of course, your best dawgs. By the time Beau arrived for their first date, word of Belle’s rule had already made its way around the dog park. Normally, Beau would have considered a rule like that more of a challenge than an obstacle. But there was something about Belle that made him think this might be one first date worth getting a second.

So Beau came prepared to be a perfect gentleman. He chose a beautiful French garden for their afternoon stroll, the kind that looked as though Monet himself might have painted it—with winding paths, water lilies, and a little bridge made for lingering. He complimented Belle’s bow, let her choose which way to walk, and kept his paws—and his lips—to himself. At first, Belle was impressed. Then she was curious. You see, Belle may not have kissed on the first date, but that had never stopped a mutt from trying. There was usually an awkward lean-in, a hopeful pucker, or at least an attempt at a quick lick. But Beau? Nothing.

By their second trip past the water lilies, Belle was beginning to feel a little put off. She slowed beside the pond. Beau slowed too. She moved closer. Beau politely admired the water lilies. Closer still. Beau was suddenly very interested in the bridge. Finally, Belle had had enough. She closed her eyes and planted one right on him. Beau kissed her back, then smiled. “I thought you didn’t kiss on the first date.” Belle smiled. “I don’t. We’ve been around the pond twice. Clearly, we’re already on our second date.” Beau grinned. His dawgs were never going to believe this.
